Environmental Stewardship: Business Practices

"Operating in an environmentally sustainable manner is not only the right thing to do, but also a key component of our corporate identity. For the past 180 years, we have been working to meet the needs of the nation's economy and we are committed to operating in a way that will continue to do so for years to come."

- Ellen Fitzsimmons, Senior Vice President-Law and
Public Affairs, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary

Recycling

CSX strives toward a goal of zero waste and therefore uses a variety of materials that can be recycled in day-to-day business. Recycling not only allows us to do our part to reduce the amount of material sent to landfills, but it also helps our bottom line. CSX considers the packaging, freight and waste associated with each product when making purchasing decisions. We encourage our suppliers to use recyclable containers for all goods we receive.

CSX has a long history of serving this nation in a responsible manner. We recycle many materials, including:

  • Steel - Yards throughout our network collect and recycle scrap metal. Old locomotives, rail cars, rails and other equipment are recycled for their steel content.

  • Batteries - Batteries used in locomotive and signal operations throughout the system are collected and properly recycled.

  • Oil - We recycle millions of gallons of oil annually and use it as an alternative fuel to heat our facilities.

  • Crossties - More than three million crossties are replaced and recycled annually. The majority of crossties are chipped and used as an alternative fuel source.

  • Land - As part of our role as an environmental steward, CSX works to remediate, restore and redevelop property. When possible, CSX has converted rail corridors into trails, providing a safe place for people to enjoy time outdoors.

Water Conservation

CSX is committed to protecting our nation's streams, rivers, lakes and oceans.

  • CSX operating procedures, the Environmental Management System (EMS) and field environmental practices are consistent with all local, state and federal environmental policies, including the Clean Water Act.

  • The company's treatment facilities cleanse and protect millions of gallons of water throughout the network every year.

  • We use an independent lab to test all water discharged from our facilities.

  • Our environmental personnel closely monitor and report test results to the appropriate regulatory bodies.

  • CSX uses web-based computer programs to monitor water flow and quality throughout the network, meeting and exceeding required standards.

  • Groundwater management - Through proper storage, use and transportation of chemicals, CSX safeguards groundwater.

  • Storm water management - We are careful to properly manage storm water throughout our 21,000-mile rail system.
  • Wastewater treatment - We use the latest treatment technologies at our wastewater treatment facilities throughout the network. We treat millions of gallons of wastewater each year.

GenSet Locomotives

GenSet locomotives reduce nitrous oxide and particulate matter emissions by 80% and can create carbon dioxide emissions savings of approximately 50% by monitoring engine idling and switching to a "sleep" mode after a period of inactivity.

GenSet locomotives are used to switch cars within rail yards and are significantly quieter than existing locomotives; they achieve the most stringent noise level requirements for off-road capital equipment.

Although CSXT has invested more than $1 billion since 2000 to upgrade its locomotive fleet with technology that reduces fuel consumption and air pollutant emissions, funding through public private partnerships often accelerates the deployment of this ultra-low emission locomotive technology.
