Chafee Environmental Award, presented by the Association of American Railroads, recognizes an individual railroad employee who has demonstrated outstanding environmental performance in the area of environmental awareness and responsibility. The North American Environmental Employee Excellence Award, presented by the Association of American Railroads, honors the industry's top environmental professional. The following CSX employees have been awarded the North American Environmental Employee Excellence Award:
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Excellence Award
In 2007, CSX was a recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency SmartWay Excellence Award, which recognizes freight carriers that have made significant contributions to protecting the environment. CSX is the only railroad among the SmartWay Transport Partnership's 600-plus members to receive this distinction.

The following CSX employees have been awarded the John H. Chafee Environmental Award for their achievements:
- Michael E. O'Malley was recognized for his leadership in energy conservation and reduction at CSXT facilities.
- Donald L. Robey was recognized for his work designing, piloting and implementing a horsepower reduction program that reduces fuel consumption and locomotive emissions.
- Russell V. Glidden was honored for his management of a wastewater treatment facility that allowed for a storm water pond to be turned into a wildlife sanctuary.
- Robert D. Toms was recognized for his dedication to the CSXT Hazmat Sentinel Program and environmental emergency training for local first-response teams.
- Ted Stewart was acknowledged for his role on the team that designed and implemented the Auxiliary Power Unit, a device that conserves fuel and reduces emissions.
- Mike Bethge was recognized for his work developing hazardous materials planning and response practices.

- Keith Brinker was recognized for his many environmental achievements over his 28-year railroading career. Among his accomplishments, Brinker established CSXT's first Environmental Operations Department; and organized CSXT's internal Environmental Crimes Unit (ECU), which ensures compliance with government and company regulations.
- Hank Cox was recognized for his wealth of knowledge and experience in environmental and hazardous material management. Cox has served as an instructor at the AAR's hazmat training center in Pueblo, Colorado where he has taught thousands of people in emergency response.
