Environmental Stewardship: Sustainability
CSX is dedicated to protecting and preserving our natural resources, working with our neighbors to encourage environmental stewardship. We work toward continuous, consistent improvement of our operations to guarantee that they are getting better every day.

Fuel Efficiency

Moving freight by rail is three times more fuel-efficient than moving freight on the highway. Trains can move a ton of freight more than 436 miles on a single gallon of fuel. Efficient use of fuel means less greenhouse gas emissions for our nation. According to the EPA, freight railroads account for just 2% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from transportation sources and well under 1% of greenhouse gas emissions from all sources.

Since 1980, through technology and innovation, the railroad industry has improved locomotive fuel efficiency by over 80%. In 2006 alone, U.S. freight railroads consumed 3.3 billion fewer gallons of diesel fuel and emitted 37 million fewer tons of carbon dioxide than they would have if their fuel efficiency had remained constant since 1980.

Every day that a CSX locomotive hauls freight is a day that CSX helps keep our air cleaner. CSX has developed an online Carbon Calculator that calculates the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions savings of specific rail shipments, providing comparative data among transportation choices.

Use the Carbon Calculator to calculate the difference our customers make by choosing rail.

We are making a difference by:

  • Actively investing in our future - Since 2000 we have invested more than $1 billion to upgrade our fleet with more efficient, Tier II clean air locomotives. These locomotives meet the latest EPA emission requirements.

  • Continuing to upgrade our technology - By 2009, an additional 1,200 CSX locomotives will be upgraded to further reduce emissions and lower fuel consumption by nearly 10 million gallons. Lowering fuel consumption by 10 million gallons saves enough energy to power over 11,000 homes for a year. (Source: http://www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/calculator.html)

  • Improving process - CSX continues to implement locomotive shutdown systems to reduce fuel consumption and related emissions. These efforts include the CSX-designed Auxiliary Power Unit, an idle reduction device that reduces nitrogen oxide emissions by 91%, hydrocarbons by 95%, carbon monoxide by 96% and particulate matter by 84%.
