CSX Purchasing & Materials Overview
CSX's Purchasing & Materials group handles the procurement and transport of items and services necessary for running a railroad.

The relationships we establish with our suppliers are important to us -- when we work together, the right things are done the right way. Our goal is to manage and safely transport a wide range of materials across the CSX system.

Areas handled by Purchasing & Materials

  • Engineering, Technology: train control; communications; work equipment; ballast and construction materials; wood products; track work and technology.
  • Fuel, Logistics, Investment Recovery: sales and/or disposition of surplus; obsolete and scrap assets and materials; procurement and distribution of fuel; transportation of company materials to and from suppliers; and from store locations to stock/application locations on the railroad. Modes include motor carrier, air cargo, and rail.
  • Indirect Purchasing, Intermodal: maintenance, repair, operations purchases (MRO); car and locomotive leasing; outside services required to support the Mechanical, Engineering, Transportation, Corporate Services, TDSI and TRANSFLO departments; and Intermodal.
  • Mechanical, Vehicle Operations: rail car and locomotive parts; the safety program; the material management processes for Mechanical and Engineering equipment; and Vehicle Operations vehicle and forklift acquisition, national account contracting/coordination.
  • Process, Administration, Policy: EDI; Oracle; eProcurement; eCatalogue Consolidation; Purchasing & Materials homepages; strategic project management; policy and administration.
  • Supplier Continuous Improvement: Internet based supplier performance tracking; Railmarketplace electronic applications.
